Museum of Flight to install exhibit on the state of travel post Sept. 11th

SEATTLE, March 22, 2004

The Museum of Flight staff and contemporary American artist Steve Maloney will install a temporary exhibition of sculptural paintings and mixed media featuring 270 lbs. of original contraband confiscated at airport security checkpoints since September 11, 2001. During the installation, Maloney will be available to answer media questions about the exhibit.

WHERE: The Museum of Flight / Boeing Field
9404 East Marginal Way S.
Seattle, WA 98108
Exit 158 off Interstate 5

MORE: Ever since increased security measures went into effect after Sept. 11th, airports have been confiscating items deemed dangerous, items that travelers once could carry on planes such as pocketknives, box cutters and scissors. Maloney acquired these items to create powerful visual representations that are intended just as much for reflection on our times as they are humorous. Laughter and a sense of humor are irresistible elements of Steve Maloney's art, individual liberations without a specific target.

The centerpiece installation of the series is titled Houdini Banned Booty Lock Up, a large, bulletproof, clear Plexi-glass box containing an enormous pile of assorted booty. The entire piece is wrapped in a rusty 60-foot chain and locked with antique padlocks. Two-dozen professional hairdressers' scissors compose A Cut Above. Needle-nosed pliers and a physician's reflex hammer must have belonged to Seasoned Travelers. In total the exhibit displays twelve works of art.

When the Transportation Security Administration put its own federal screeners in place on Nov. 19, 2002, it suddenly had to start dealing with the tons of items that errant fliers leave at checkpoints every day. Most recently the TSA started to assess fines ranging from $250 to $10,000 for passengers who violate security policies. Once caught with banned items, passengers have few choices but to surrender the booty, which is how Steve Maloney's most recent series was conceived.

Banned Booty will be on display at The Museum of Flight March 27-July 24, 2004. Exhibit is free with Museum admission.
