Artist Statement
My 'Winding Road ' sculpture merges in twisted tangles begging to burst free. Bound by rivets, welds and cable with deliberate fragmentation and deconstruction; the car parts create a vivid visual paean to contemporary challenges faced by automobile manufacturers to develop vehicles that meet the needs of our very mobile society. The goal is all encompassing: a powerful machine with smooth handling and optimal fuel-efficiency, wrapped in a sexy package.
Abstraction, I have found, does not have to exclude reality. Rather, my artworks combine the pair by using actual objects to convey images of speed, velocity and Americana. In the case of 'Winding Road', actual part from a Lexus RX 400 Hybrid convey the message to the viewer of powering up on a snaking byway, hugging it tight, accelerating with abandon without over-steering - the perfect ride.
'Winding Road's' sculpture components are mounted within a shipping container, whose interior surfaces are covered reflectively to add visual power and movement to the piece. The container is an integral part of the sculpture and a metaphor for today's global society in perpetual motion.
