What is California artist Steve Maloney up to now?
He is preparing for the tenth anniversary of 911 with an expanded exhibition of his Banned Booty.
Steve has just accepted delivery from storage 43 cartons, roughly a ton (2,000 lbs) of confiscated goods taken from air traveler's carry-ons by the TSA (Transportation Security Administration). He purchased the whole lot back in 2002 from a government bureau in Sacramento that collected it from the TSA inspectors at 8 major California airports and has had it under lock and key waiting for just the right time to make more art out of it. His plan is to create several very large and exciting new pieces to complement the 12 works now under the conservatorship of The Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington.
" Every year that passes changes your perception as you view these everyday items" Maloney says, " It is fascinating like they have been in a time capsule"
As part of the exhibition over the next year Maloney will be reaching out to the original owners of the "Stuff" to reconnect them with their booty since many are engraved with names and phone numbers. He will attempt to document their stories of how the contraband was collected. "Where were they going, who were they going to see, how did the feel giving up their possessions for the safety of all traveling?
As always Maloney takes the social temperature of American Culture and then creates art to communicate his take on things - this project is no different! He will enlist today's fascination with social media like Facebook and other social media sites to help achieve his goals.
Stay tuned and near the phone, who knows maybe he has your Swiss Army knife your uncle sent you 25years ago that you had to surrender at the LAX screener while racing home in time to witness the birth of your son, who is now 9 years old.
